Kinetic: A powerhouse in technological innovation

Like mechanical and quartz, Kinetic is a platform. Over the past 20 years, SEIKO has created on this platform a suite of Kinetic movements, each bringing unique features to the consumer.

It was at the 1986 Basel Fair that SEIKO unveiled its first Kinetic prototype. Introduced under the trial name of 'AGM', it was the first watch in the world to convert kinetic movement into electrical energy. It was the first step in a development that, 20 years later, has made Kinetic synonymous with environmental friendliness, high performance and long-lasting convenience to a generation of users worldwide. From the launch in 1988 of the first commercially available watch (then under the new name AGS) until today, over eight million Kinetic watches have been sold (as of 2007).

In 1998, Kinetic Auto Relay was released, extending the 'at-rest' operating period of the watch to a remarkable 4 years. 1999 saw the launch of the Ultimate Kinetic Chronograph, a masterpiece which fused the very best of SEIKO's mechanical and electronic watch making skills, and in 2003 another Kinetic Chronograph was launched. At Baselworld 2005, the Kinetic Perpetual made its first appearance, combining Kinetic convenience and longevity with a perpetual calendar, correct to the year 2100. In 2007, SEIKO's emotional technology Kinetic Direct Drive is introduced.

Love It
I've owned Seko watches for more than 30 years, and have always marveled at how tough and accurate they are. When I was ready to buy a new Seiko, only because I wanted a little change in wrist jewelry, I concluded that this kinetic watch was among the most attractive by my standards of conservative elegance.

For example, the stainless steel markings on the watch face are highly refelective and they sometimes flash briefly as they catch the light - which adds just the right amount of pizazz. The clasp on the wrist band is a new post type (to me); it gives a very nice, positive latching action.

Last but not least, I love the "kinetic" winding - which means that I'll never have to buy a battery for this watch. I walk enough, and work out at the gym enough, so that within a few days the watch became fully charged, which according to the manufacturer, means that it had reserve power enough to last 6 months without any further motion. Goodbye watch batteries.

In summary - I love it. I would have rated it 5 stars if it displayed the day of the week as well as the day of the month.

Nice watch with the right price
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R35AREBJW4BV8A I've always liked nice watches.I do not like blingy watches, gold or 2 tone watches.

I'm coming from an Omega Seamaster Pro 2254.50 (sold already) which has incredible readability in any light conditions (perfect for aging eyes) but with the only drawback of a high priced maintenance premium.

I've been looking for a watch that could replace it and being honest, I looked for:

1) Tissot
2) Seiko
3) Citizen

I went to the mall, looking for official dealers per each one of the manufacturers websites and, before a lot of research, I knew that:

1) Tissot won't honor a warranty for a watch bought on the Internet.
2) Seiko won't honor a warranty for a watch bought on the Internet, unless its clearly stated that the seller is an authorized Seiko reseller.
3) Citizen will honor a purchase from Amazon, being them an authorized reseller.

So, I went to the mall looking for 3 specific watches:

1)Tissot PRC200 Mens Watch T014.410.11.057.00

2) Citizen Men's Eco-Drive Calibre 8700 Watch #BL8000-54A

3) Seiko Men's Kinetic Silver-Tone Watch #SKA347

The Tissot has a very good finish and specs. (sapphire crystal and 200 M water resistance for example)
The things I didn't like about it was that the bracelet was very heavy and there are red hour markings in the inner bezel. The good thing also is a 2 year International warranty) The bad thing: just another quartz watch with no innovations at all.

Then I looked at the Citizen. Everything looked awesome on that watch except the white dial and roman numerals looks like they are made of plastic, not metal, very artificial looking. The Eco Drive feature was a plus but the dial (aside being too busy) was a deal breaker. Also, they use simple mineral crystal and saw a lot of scratches on the face of a different one who belongs to a watchmaker that works at Jared.

At last, I went to Times Square booth (listed on Seiko's website) and started looking for a Kinetic.

First I handed the Premier's: very nice looking but super heavy and then I saw the one I'm reviewing here.

It looked bold, easy to read, uncluttered dial, good lume, Kinetic movement, perfect case size for my wrist, slim profile (compared to the other ones), sits very nice on the wrist, nice bracelet (very similar to Omega's Speedy bracelet), 100 M WR meaning I can use it in the pool, a piece of cake to setup, Hardlex crystal and a 3 year warranty, being the first year International and 2 years valid only in the US and I was sold. I need a watch that just tells the time and the day, that's all. (I don't like busy looking dials with functions that you may never use, although the Citizen's dial caught my eye...on the Internet but NOT in person))

If I decide to criticize something I don't like about the watch is the fact that the hour and minute hands are white painted, not chrome/ polished looking. But this detail makes those hands to pop out a little more, making them easier to read at a glance. Then I remembered my already gone Omega Seamaster which had the same design concept but the opposite way: shiny metal hands filled with Luminova and painted markers, which made that watch so unique.

I've also decided on Seiko because is the ONLY watch company (aside some Swiss manufacturers) that does everything in house. (movement, crystals, bracelet, even the oils used for lubrication)

I can't attest yet on it's durability and accuracy (just got it yesterday) but I will post updates in the future.

Thanks for reading.

Update: after a week of use, the watch is spot on with www.time.gov.

PS:I bought this watch and like it very much, although there is something I don't get.

With a good regular quartz watch, you change batteries every 5-8 years. With the Kinetic is the same, the battery will stop holding a charge after about the same time, so, WHAT's the point of Kinetics? It seems just another marketing scam.
Great, solid men's watch
I got this watch for my boyfriend for Christmas, I thought he'd like the kinetic feature (he loves tech gadgets, especially when they're functional). He really got a kick out of it. Sometimes I see him rocking the watch back and forth just for fun.

My only concern is that as you move the watch, it makes a slight noise that sounds like something grinding. When you turn the watch over and look through the clear backing, you can see this piece of metal rotate as you swing the watch to charge it. It's very neat looking, and I love the clear background, but the noise was a little worrisome. The manual says the noise is ok and expected, but in a quiet room you can hear it.

It's a solidly built watch, and it looks great. I purchased it because of the great reviews I had seen about the company. It has a professional look, but still young and a little sporty. My boyfriend is a grad student, so he needs something nicer than his old sports watch, but something he can still wear everyday around town.

Finally, the date function needs to be adjusted every month to account for months with 30 and 31 days. Perhaps people expect this, but coming from a digital watch, it seems like a bit of a hassle. I saw another Seiko that automatically adjusts the date for something like 100 years, but it was out of my price range. This one does the job, it just requires some upkeep.
Good looking, a bit heavy
I've been wearing this watch for about 2 years now. It's a bit heavier that I'd prefer, but I guess that's because it has the kinetic mechanism. When I bought it, I was a bit concerned with its faceplate being too large based on its photo. However the real item looks perfectly fine. It's shiny, classy, and I love the metal on black background contrast. I feel good when I wear this watch and am proud to have it seen by others.
Good one
This is a good product, works great, as it was described, no surprises yet :)

poor watch
I bought this watch in July 2006 from Amazon. At first it had problem with date now and then. Now it is running about 5 min slower everyday. Don't buy this poor Seiko watch.
Fades in the stretch
I wore this watch happily for about a year and a half. It is a handsome timepiece, it feels extremely solid and it kept perfect time . . . until it didn't. This is the second Seiko kinetic watch I have owned that has begun failing to keep and hold a charge after a relatively short period of use. The second hand started skipping in two-second intervals (indicating a low charge) and shaking the watch back and forth as recommended in the instructions only keeps it working normally for a few hours. The kinetic-electric mechanism in Seiko watches is fine in principle but it doesn't appear to be reliable in the long run.
A Giant Monster Watch
Watch is handsome, keeps excellent time, has great Seiko kinetic, indeed great perpetual kinetic technology, but ...

It is a Giant Monster Watch, unbelievably heavy, astonishingly large, with broad inflexible sides to which the steel watchband attaches (those sides appear to be the first two band links on either side of the watch, but that appearance is cosmetic only as they do not flex).

The result - - one of the most uncomfortable watches to wear imaginable. No matter where the watch is placed on the arm, its astonishing bulk will pull it down so that it pushes into the upper portion of the hand. If worn on the left hand, the potruding knob will eventually guage a dent in the top of the hand. If the wrist is bent upwards, depending upon the position of the watch at the time (and its weight and gravity determine its position), the upward wrist motion is significantly restricted by the watch (don't do pushups with it on, as you will surely break your wrist). If you tighten the band to attempt to hold the watch on the arm above the wrist, the heavy watch and tight band combination will cause significant discomfort, and sooner or later, due to the weight of the watch, it will slip down onto the wrist joint, where a tight steel watchband will cause the watch to threaten to break the bones in your wrist with every movement.

I should return this watch to Amazon, but its band has been adjusted (and then readjusted) to try to obtain some comfort. Also, I do not want to add to my troubles with Amazon concerning this watch. My first try at purchasing this watch from Amazon direct resulted in my being sent a previously returned watch sold to me as brand new (I returned it). On this second go around, it took numerous contacts with Amazon and Seiko before either would confirm that Seiko would honor the warranty (it would for watches sold direct by Amazon, not third party vendors).

BTW, I have a normal sized wrist, and have not experienced a problem with Amazon previously, and I would love this watch, and its many good qualities, were it possible to wear it in comfort.

G-man
did not keep correct date
I have had this watch since summer of 06. This leap year I have noticed the watch had not kept the correct date despite the fact that I have set the leap year correctly (on three separate occasions). The reason I got this watch was so I would not have to worry about ever having an incorrect date. For some reason the watch had problems with the begining of march and the end of march. Just today I looked at my watch and it said it was April 1st. When it said yesterday was March 30 (31 days in March). I am kind of pissed.
Seiko watch
The watch is beautiful and the sales process was great, quick and complete.
However,on the third week the crystal face and ring fell off the watch and the hands got bent. This should not happen to a $700.00 watch! It is presently at Seiko and I am awaiting a response, replacement.

This watch has been advertized as a titanium watch. It is not but a stainless steel watch coated with titanium. It is a very heavy watch and in my opinion not worth the price asked.
Looks really good, but second hand broken after 3 months
1. In my opinion the watches looks very attractive on the arm.
2. It's stainless case and band covered by something durable (after 3 months there aren't any scratches or marks).
3. Not lightweight. First week (after my previous titanium watches) I felt some weight on arm, but now it's ok. I don't feel it.

All above are good points, but ...

Today I've found out that the trotting second-hand is broken and disconnected from the pivot.
And it's not my fault (I didn't swap it; I was careful and accurate with the watches.)
Production defect? I don't know. But now I have to send it to service for repair.
Accurate and attractive
I've now had the watch about three weeks and it has lost about 1/2 of a second in that time, which is well within the 15 seconds per month mentioned in the warranty.

The ion plated finish is beautiful. It is dressier than watches I usually wear. I will be removing it before working on the car or digging in the yard.

The self charging feature works well. Movement during shipping had charged the watch up to a one month reserve, as indicated by the power reserve indicator. It was charged to the full 4 to 6 month reserve after about two days on my wrist.

My only disappointment is the performance of the LumiBrite glow-in-the-dark hands and markers. They shine brightly immediately after exposure to bright light but grow very dim after several hours in the dark. If readability in the dark is a priority for you, a watch with tritium hands and markers is a much better choice.
Beautiful watch!
I thought this watch looked good in the online photos, but when you open the box it is absolutely beautiful! I have had a gold tone men's Seiko watch with a black face for at least fifteen years, but the process of having to replace batteries every year had resulted in some loss of integrity to the case seal and I decided it was time to replace it. This one appealed to me because of the kinetic feature, as well as appearance and also presently available at a very good price (I paid $216). The clear case back allows you to see the pendulum that spins to recharge the kinetic power cell, and that looks pretty cool! Both the case and band are coated with a TiCN material that looks like polished black ceramic, absolutely stunning in contrast with the gold bezel. I just hope it lasts as long as my previous Seiko...
Long Time Seiko User
I've just ordered this watch with no worries at all. I have been wearing SEIKO watches since the mid 60's when I was in Nam. Never a problem, we used to call them a "Far East Timex" then. I already have the Ti model and a few others and love them.

Kinetic function is disappointing.
This is a very attractive watch and seems to work well once you subject it to enough movement. Therein lies the problem -- seems that you have to wear it every day in order for the "kinetic" function to keep time. I bought this for my boyfriend since I love my Citizen Eco-drive and expected Seiko's kinetic system to be similar. I was wrong. I have had my Citizen for years without any problem, even if I don't wear it for a period of time. Since my boyfriend has a blue collar job, he doesn't wear this dress watch every day. When he does wear it, he has to reset it and give it enough motion to get it to work. We are quite disappointed. My intent was to give him something with less maintenance, not more. Wish I had bought a battery-operated watch instead. If you're not going to wear it every day, I'd suggest you purchase another brand or a battery model.
Great watch, but not reliable.
I bought this watch in January, 2004. Two years later, the watch stopped dead for no reason. The watch had to be sent to the Seiko, U.S.A. factory for six weeks, but was repaired under warranty. Exactly one year later, it has stopped dead again and now has been sent to the factory for another six week evaluation and repair, this time out of warranty coverage.
I have owned several Seiko watches and they were bullet-proof. I suspect the power generator in the kinetic watch is the weak link. My jeweler confirms that kinetic watches are less reliable and more repair prone than other Seikos. Let the buyer beware!
Otherwise, the watch has been wear-resistant and light on the wrist. The design is very attractive and upscale in appearance. The dial facing has insufficient luminescence to be legible in the dark.
I will replace this watch with a non-kinetic watch if the repair cost is unreasonable. But my next watch will still be a Seiko!

Superb Watch, Looks Like New After 5 Years.
My wife bought me this watch almost five years ago. It has worked flawlessly and still looks like new.
It is the most accurate watch I have ever owned. It gains about 1 second every 2 months. The Kinetic charging system always has 6 months of charge.
You will find yourself moving your arm to hear the reassuring rotor sound as the watch charges up.
The nicest thing is that is goes well with my wedding ring. Just enough gold to look nice, but not gaudy. The gold plating must be pretty thick. Even on the bottom the band, where it rubs the desk when I am typing looks like new. The band does not pinch or grab your arm hairs. The clasp has never come loose.
If you look at a Grand Seiko, which runs about $1,000 more, it has almost the same band, without the gold.
Ladies, if you buy the man in your life this watch, he will not be disappointed.
Men, if you want a reliable watch that looks even more expensive than it is, choose this watch.
Fine Timepiece
I had been after my husband for several years to get a new watch. His was clunky, scratched and just ugly - plus the clasp kept coming undone every hour or so. I finally decided to take the decision out of his hands and went looking for a new watch as a Christmas gift. I had no inclination to drag all over Houston looking at every watch emporium so Amazon seemed to be the best option for shopping from my computer. I was blown away by the huge selection and had no trouble at all finding exactly what I was looking for. It is a two-tone Seiko kenetic watch and he just loves it. He said it is much nicer than what he would have bought for himself. What more could I ask for...?
Cool watch
I've had mine for several month and I like it very much. It looks great, no need to wind it or change batteries. Very nice product.

Would be a great watch...if the crown stayed in place
This would be my favorite watch, except for one fatal flaw--the crown constantly pops out. It only has to catch on my shirt sleeve, or even my wrist if I flick it wrong, and the crown pops up, stopping the watch. This happens so much that the watch is virtually useless. Every time I check it, I have to cross check it with my cell phone to make certain the crown hasn't popped up and stopped the watch. Perhaps I have a faulty crown; I'll take it in to see if it can be repaired, but if it costs me a dime to even ship it, I won't bother. It would just be throwing good money after bad.
Good looking watch
I've had this watch for a while now and decided to change my earlier review, and if Amazon allowed it I would bump it up a star. I still think not having a screw-down stem is a mistake if you're going to have any water resistance. That, and I dislike the little button to check the power level with on the watch, because if it is out of power it will stop, you know? Its relative charge is not something I am interested in knowing. That aside, it has kept good time and the black finish is holding up well, which is something I worried about. It is a good looking watch and slightly different from the usual fodder at this price level. All in all, a good buy and worth four stars.
Great overall watch, not a huge fan of the band
I just received this watch a few days ago, so my review is based mostly off first impressions. Please take what I say with a grain of salt.

I was looking for a watch that had some class and distinct styling to it, but I wanted a weekend watch as well. This watch definitely fit the bill. It can be "dressed up" or "dressed down", depending on how you want to look. The dial is very readable and pleasant to look at.

My personality is such that I hate any kind of bling. I hate shiny-ness or over the top decor. The watch itself is fine in this regard, but my biggest gripe is with the band. I don't think the images accurately depict the band. The band has some shiny accents, which I personally felt was a bit much. The picture gave me the impression of a more matte/dulled steel finish, but after holding the watch in my hand, this wasn't really the case. For some people, this may be a good thing, but I personally would have liked the shiny-ness toned down a couple of notches.

The watch seems to keep very good time, although I haven't accurately counted it down the second. The kinetic mechanism appears to be solid. When shaking the watch in your hand to charge the battery, you can actually hear the weight from the inside of the watch moving around. But when walking or casually moving your arms, the sound is not audible.

The watch definitely has some weight to it, which I personally think is a good thing. This watch comes off as being a watch-lovers watch, in the sense that you can really feel it as a part of you. The shape of the watch offers a masculine and rugged appearance, but not so over the top that it will give the impression you are overly insecure about your manhood. The black color was one of the main reasons I was drawn to the watch (along with the price), and it looks quite sharp.

The red touch on the moving bezel is quite tasteful. The glow-in-the-dark hands/numbers are fine, although I wouldn't recommend it for use when camping. The clasp is sturdy and well made.

If you are looking for a watch you can wear to work, but still keep on when hanging out drinking beers with your buddies, this watch is great. In terms of quality and form factor, it doesn't get much better than Seiko. Just keep in mind that the bling is not as subtle as the images depict.
Great product...would recommend to anyone
I am currently deployed to Iraq and the watch I came with stopped working so I thought I'd order a new watch. I wanted something that didn't require a battery, wouldn't stop working and that was reliable. Having owned a Seiko kintetic in the past it was natural for me to look at their selection.

I settled on this one because I don't need the bling. I like the black finish and red dial. I recieved this watch very quickly (I'm in Iraq) and began wearing immediately. I have had no issues with it and love it. This watch is not bulky like I expected it to be, very low profile on your wrist and wears comfortably. I wear this watch on combat missions, during PT, in the gym, everywhere. I only take it off when I sleep.

I would recommend this watch to anyone looking for good quality and a nice masculine watch.
Simple and fashionable
I wanted a basic watch that could act as an everyday watch as well as something could be worn out for the evening. The black band looks great, and I get more compliments than friends who spent much more for a flashy watch. I am more than satisfied with the purchase of this watch.

The idea of capturing our kinetic energy is not new. One Canadian firm has a device that is like a knee brace, but it’s heavy and expensive. Seiko sells a watch that runs on human motion. And there are those flashlights that are powered by shaking. Lemieux estimates his device is about 100X more powerful than the similarly-sized flashlights. Or, perhaps more remarkably, he says an hour of walking produces as much power as plugging most any hand held gadget in a wall for an hour.

For now, the PEG’s size and price—roughly $150 bucks—make it accessible, but it’s definitely a product for green gadget aficionados .

LEMIEUX: Initially, we’re seeing this as a niche product that’s going to be wanted by students, outdoorspeople, commuters, people who have the multifunction devices like Blackberries and iPhones.

Lemieux is hoping to sell about 75,000 PEGs next year, giving his tiny start-up a piece of the $107 million market for so-called energy harvesting devices. That includes products like small solar chargers. Lemieux calls his technology Npower, and has plans for it both big and small. He wants to implant it in pacemakers and on large buoys in Lake Erie to harvest wave energy. But his immediate focus is getting the PEG manufactured and ready for sale.
