Thousands walk in Rochester to help fight breast cancer
It’s a way for people to get together and fight this awful disease, but it’s also a way to support survivors,” said American Cancer Society regional vice president Matthew J. Flanigan.
Cancer Society officials said Sunday’s crowd raised about $775,000.
The walk started at the corner of Oak and Platt streets at 10 a.m. and followed a route to the Liberty Pole in downtown Rochester and back, for a total of about three miles. Walks also took place Sunday in Buffalo, Syracuse and Binghamton.
Bonnie Burdin, 51, of Cohocton, Steuben County, was diagnosed with breast cancer in July. She was joined by 23 friends and relatives who raised about $2,400.
Burdin said she always knew that breast cancer affected many families, “but I never thought about it until it hit me how many people are actually affected,” she said.
Nancy Dudash, 50, of Springwater, Livingston County, was diagnosed with breast cancer in July and had a double mastectomy about two weeks ago. Ten of her friends and relatives walked with her in her honor and in memory of another friend and Dudash’s mother, Shirley Nemitz, both of whom died from breast cancer.
